The May Birthstone

The modern and traditional May Birthstone is the EMERALD. The Emerald is also the Arabic, Hindu, Polish and Russian birthstone for May.
The Hebrew and Roman birthstone for May is the Agate. Birthstones also have links with the signs of the zodiac and May has two signs: Taurus (April 21st - May 20th) and Gemini (May 21st - June 20th), therefore various other birthstones are associated with May and these include Chrysoprase, Sapphire Garnet and Diamond.

Emerald - the May Birthstone

For thousands of years Emeralds have been admired, revered and worshiped for their vibrant green colour, their natural beauty and obvious value. They have graced the treasure troves, artifacts, thrones and crown jewels of royalty, empires, religions and civilisations and have been highly sought after and fought over by the rich and the powerful.

Weight for weight the Emerald is the most valuable of the gemstones.

The Emerald is considered to symbolise friendship, loyalty, love and fidelity.
The ancient Greeks considered it to be the talisman of the goddess Venus, representing faith, goodness and kindness.

A deep green colour is traditionally associated with the Emerald and in fact the word Emerald is derived from the Greek word Smaragdos which translates to green stone in the English language.

In the northern hemisphere May is in late spring and seen as a time of growth in the garden. The intense green of the Emerald is associated with springtime and with this season of life, rebirth and joyous colour.

The Emerald is the green member of the Beryl family of minerals.

Pure Beryl has no colour; the green of the Emerald is due to traces of chromium and vanadium.

The Emerald has a good hardness which mainly protects it from scratching however it is rather brittle and all but the very best specimens have flaws (inclusions) and fissures which make them a challenge to the gem cutter. Despite this difficulty it is still a much loved and favourite gem of Jewellers, Gem Cutters and Designers.

Like all other coloured gemstones Emeralds are graded by the "Four C's": Colour, Cut, Clarity and Crystal (Crystal in this case meaning transparency)
